The Pantanal
Before heading South towards Argentina we extended our stay to visit a huge wetland area known as the Pantanal which stretches over to the Bolivian border. We stayed in a ‘floating’ lodge, actually a series of huts on stilts connected by walkways.
A view over the waterways at sunset.
A typical Pantanal scene.
The area is famous for its abundant birdlife.
This bird runs very quickly lifting its knee joints far above its back in a very comical way.
The Caraway bird is one of the most conspicuous birds in the area.
Capybara are very large rodents which look like overgrown guinea-pigs. They like sunbathing in the dust by the side of the road. They have an annoying habit of pointing their rear end towards you as soon as you get the camera out!
We managed to catch this mother with her baby though.
